Climate

Vienna has a mild continental climate. Even if the occasional winter day is icy and some days in high summer can bring sweltering heat to the palaces of the old city, most days of the year the weather matches the residents of the city: friendly, mild and moderate...

Vienna is in the Central European time zone (CET = GMT / UCT + 1). Daylight saving time applies from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October (CEST).

The official language is German. The most commonly spoken foreign language is English.

Currency

The Euro (EUR). If you need to exchange money, you are best doing this at a bank. Foreign exchange booths sometimes charge high fees, so please check, before you change your money. Most banks in Vienna are open from Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 12.30 pm and from 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm, and until 5.30 pm on Thursdays. In the city centre (1st district), almost all banks are open over lunchtime.

Credit card payments and cash withdrawals

You can also pay for your purchases without problem by card. The most popular credits are usually accepted in Vienna, although sometimes their use is subject to a minimum purchase amount. You can use your Maestro card (bank ATM card) almost everywhere - especially in shops - even for small amounts.
You can withdraw cash with Maestro and credit cards at cash dispensers, which can be found everywhere in the city. Please note that charges may apply for withdrawing cash; the charges vary from bank to bank.

Tipping

In many service areas, such as restaurants, taxis, hairdressers, serviced filling stations, etc., a tip is traditionally given. This is normally 5 to 10 percent, with the exact amount depending on the level of satisfaction with the service provided.

Electricity

The typical mains voltage is 230 volts (alternating current). Plugs and sockets conform to the European norm. Plugs are two-pronged.
