Huntington team at Uppsala University Hospital
Uppsala University Hospital is called “Akademiska Sjukhuset” in Swedish. The University Hospital serves a large part of middle Sweden as referral center for a population of 1.5-2 million people. Many patients live in distant, sparsely populated areas at considerable distance from Uppsala. For this reason, the University Hospital collaborates closely with local health facilities, including local hospitals, primary care centers and general practitioners.

Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease with neurological and psychological symptoms. Multidisciplinary medical care can improve the quality of life for Huntington patients. The disease is dominantly inherited and DNA testing for the disease causing mutation is available. Huntington families should have access to genetic counselling, and the possibility of presymptomatic testing and prenatal diagnostics.
The University Hospital of Uppsala has for a long time provided care and services to Huntington patients and their families, and since 2002 there is a permanent Multidisciplinary Huntington Team. Under the auspices of the Center for Clinical Neurosciences, the team constitutes a collaboration of several departments, including Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy.
The purpose of the Huntington Team is to provide a comprehensive program of medical services to Huntington patients, their relatives and caretakers, as well as to serve as source of information and experience for health professionals. <!--[if !supportLists]-->

The patients, their relatives and caretakers, will have several 1-hour appointments with different team members. Lunch is provided.
Presymptomatic testing for Huntington's disease is offered according to the internationally recommended guidelines. (Contact the Huntington's team for details.) Prenatal diagnostics are available in collaboration with the Department of Obstrics and Gynaecology.
