Environment
Wolfson Ward is a purpose built unit located within a separate
building in the hospital’s grounds. Opened in 1997 the environment is well
equipped to suit the patient group and provides 14 single rooms. Wolfson has a
range of facilities such as a structured environment balancing stimulation and
relaxation, providing opportunities for therapy and other activities within the
unit. It also has its own private garden.
Andrew Reed Ward has 18 single rooms as well as day areas. The
ward has a snoezelen room.
Coombs Ward provides 10 single rooms and one shared room. The day
area of this ward is a beautiful conservatory overlooking the gardens giving a
very tranquil atmosphere.
Wards have full access to the wealth of resources available at the
hospital. This include a wide range of clinical services as well as community
resources such as an on site GP surgery, dental facilities, pharmacy, bank,
shop, post office, café, hairdressers and chapel.
Social and Recreational Activities
Each ward runs activities, which form an integral part of every day life. The
teams organise several recreational groups and a wide range of special interest
groups ranging from music appreciation to literature and current affairs are
also provided.
Numerous outings and holidays are available, which include trips to the
theatre, areas of local interest and sporting events.
Introduction
The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability provides assessment,
rehabilitation, treatment, long-term and respite placements for people with
Huntington’s disease. The service is provided on three wards, which aim to meet
the needs of patients in different stages of the disease.
Wolfson Ward specialises in services for patients in the middles
stages of the disease.
Andrew Reed Ward caters for those in the mid to late stages
Coombs Ward has been specially developed for residents in the late stages of
Huntington’s disease.
Wards work closely together to ensure continuity of care and
maintenance of professional links.
The multidisciplinary teams on these wards have recognised expertise in the
treatment and management of Huntington’s and are flexible to the changing needs
of the patients.
The hospital provides a range of further resources available to patients and
their family.
Research
A large number of staff are involved in research. Research range from basic science to clinical investigations. The unit has strong links with the HDA on both regional and national levels. A list of staff and their roles can be found below.
