Aims
The UKHDN aims to bring together scientists and clinicians
with an interest in Huntington’s disease, in order to expedite research into
treatments. One of the major
driving forces behind the establishment of the network was the recognition that
historically, large clinical trials with this patient population have been
difficult because of small population samples. The Network has two
main aims: -To establish a large cohort of
well-characterised patients with a view to rapid implementation of
clinical trials as and when new therapies emerge; -To facilitate clinical studies aimed
at increasing understanding of the pathogenic processes underlying the
neural damage seen in HD. Background Established in
January 2003, the United Kingdom Huntington’s disease Network (UKHDN) aims to
bring clinicians and basic scientists together in order to work towards
effective management and treatment of people either at-risk of or affected by,
Huntington’s disease (HD). The Network is
coordinated from Cardiff University, where management and communication of
network activities is conducted for over 20 UK member sites. The Chair of the UKHDN is Professor Anne E.
Rosser and the Steering Committee is listed above. The UKHDN is affiliated with
and has close working relationship with the EHDN; all UKHDN sites joined the EHDN in 2004.
Financial Support The UKHDN was
founded with financial support from the Dunhill Medical Trust, with assistance from the Huntington's Disease Association. We thank CHDI Inc. and for additional
financial support via links with the EHDN.
